"The AMC purpose is to ensure that standards of education, training and assessment of the medical profession promote and protect the health of the Australian community. " The Australian Medical Council (AMC) is an independent national standards body for medical education and training and has four core functions.
The AMC:
- assesses medical courses and training programs (both medical school courses and the programs for training medical specialists) and accredits programs which meet AMC accreditation standards
- assesses international medical graduates (IMGs) who wish to practise medicine in Australia
- advises medical boards on uniform approaches to the registration of medical practitioners and the maintenance of professional standards in the medical profession
- advises the Australian Government on the recognition of medical specialties.
The AMC does not:
- register doctors, which is a function of the state and territory medical boards
- have responsibility for medical employment in Australia
- make decisions regarding Australia's medical workforce
- process applications for medical training in Australia
- provide continuing medical education courses or other medical training.
