All International Medical Graduates (IMGs) applying for registration in Australia and for assessment through the Australian Medical Council (AMC) or Specialist Pathways must complete primary source verification as a prerequisite for assessment and registration.
Based upon the experience of the AMC with processing primary source verification (EICS) requests of medical qualifications for IMGs, the AMC has developed a list of overseas institutions that have not responded to primary source verification requests or have been particularly slow to respond.
The list developed by the AMC shows those overseas institutions which have not responded to more than 60% of all EICS requests sent to them by the AMC in the period from 1 January 2006 to 30 April 2009. The AMC will update this list as it continues to receive data from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) on EICS request response rates by overseas institutions.
IMG's applying to the AMC under one of its assessment pathways or applying for EICS verification only for registration purposes should check the list developed by the AMC before applying to understand that there may be delays in progressing through assessment toward obtaining medical registration.
If an IMG is able to identify their overseas medical training institution in the list provided by the AMC, we recommend that they contact the institution to confirm that the institution will respond to the EICS verification request through the agreed processes between the AMC, the ECFMG and the relevant overseas institution.
The list of overseas institutions known to the AMC to have a high percentage of outstanding EICS requests can be accessed by clicking here.
Important note: The fact that an overseas institution appears on this list does not preclude an IMG who has graduated from the institution from applying to the AMC under its assessment pathways or for EICS verification only for registration purposes. However, primary source verification (EICS) for medical qualifications is a formal requirement for medical board registration in Australia and is also a requirement for the awarding of the AMC Certificate in the AMC non-specialist assessment pathways. AMC experience has shown that delays occur when an overseas institution has not responded to an EICS verification request for an IMG that either is completing, or has already completed all other assessment pathway requirements. |
